GASTRONOMY
In Lamego gastronomy is an art and a celebration. Most of
traditional dishes and desserts have a history of centuries and
their recipes passed from generation to generation. Many of the most
popular and appreciated sweets had its origin in convents and it was
created in the secret of the gods.
This wisdom and this art the People of Lamego is proud to
have. Ttherefore a traditional meal, accompanied by a good wine, is
always a privilege for those who appreciate the more authentic
typical gastronomy.
It is required to nibble to relish “Bolas de Lamego” with smoked
ham, cooked ham, Chicken, tuna, cod fish or sardines. Ham and
sausages from Lamego are well known throughout the country, are also
an excellent appetizing.
For the main course, the roast kid and potatoes, rice cooked in the
oven. This is the most representative dish of Lamego’s gastronomy.
You can also choose maize with spare ribs, by Trout in “escabeche”
sauce, or roast rabbit for who appreciates game.
For dessert, it is worth to taste an Apple Tart, a Biscuit of “Teixeira”,
or an egg’s sweet.
Whatever menu is chosen to accompanying it is essential a good
Maduro wine from the region, red or white. On red-letter days, a
toast with a glass of natural sparkling wine produced here gives a
touch of refinement to any meal.

ARTS AND CRAFTS
Lamego is a city where art has
always a space and traditions are preserved and promoted as
treasures of cultural identity. Therefore wisdom of artisan handed
down from generation to generation still a strong tourist
attraction.
The basketwork is one of the more
typical arts in Lamego. It is associated to traditional methods to
grape-gathering. For centuries wooden baskets were used to carry
grapes to press.
Tanoa (to make casks) is another
art associated to wine. The Oak casks and vats remain associated
with the local culture and habits. Nowadays, these activities are
among the most characteristic arts and crafts. For love of tradition
the artisans still hand making these products.
Lazarim Masks
Lazarim is a village in the
municipality of Lamego.
The wooden carved carnival masks are an ex-libris.
In this village the Celebration of “entrudo” is among the most
typical of Portugal.
Hundreds of people come from
everywhere.
These masks are a fine piece of
workmanship. The population is very proud of it.
... pack-saddle, leather straps and
other implements to animals are part of the arts and crafts in
Lamego, as well.
Pottery crafted in black potter's earth
is the most typical in this region. Carpentry, tin-smith's work,
weaving and iron forged work are other forms of crafts alive.
LAMEGO ... always a festival!
The
“Nossa Senhora dos Remedio”s religious Festival is well known as the
pilgrimage of Portugal. It begins at the last
Thursday of August and concludes September 8th. in the
course of the festival thousands of people come to Lamego.
Amusement and religious celebrations
are united here.
The Holy Week (The week before Easter day) is the highlight of
religious life of the city. The way of the Cross, the blessing of
flowers and the ritual hot bread are some of the great moments of
these two weeks.
The
Santa Cruz fair is one of the most full of
life of Lamego. It takes place on May 3rd nearby
Santa Cruz headquarters. Horses and cattle
are the main attractions of this fair.
Carnival
of Lazarim. Lazarim is a village in the municipality
of Lamego. In
this village the Celebration of “entrudo” is among the most typical
of Portugal.
Hundreds of people come from
everywhere.
The burning of Judas, in Lalim, is a
very antique tradition that reaches each year a unique expression.
It is one of the most expressive traditions of paschal calendar.
